Stress, mental illness often overlooked in workers' compensation

The term workers’ compensation brings to mind injuries caused by falling objects or heavy equipment and other examples of physical injury. Mental health issues that cannot be diagnosed with an x-ray or blood test are usually not considered in this context. It can be difficult for workers with complaints in the psychological realm to recover benefits under workers’ compensation laws due to little or no objective data of the condition itself or its relation to a worker’s employment. 

OSHA concerned about rise in cell tower accidents

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has sent a warning to cell phone carriers and cell tower contractors regarding the number of accidents that are happening on their cell towers. In 2013, the number of fatal work accidents at cell towers ballooned to 13. That may not sound like a lot, but that figure represents more deaths at cell towers than in 2011 and 2012 combined.

OSHA cites Schwan's for 32 safety and health violations

Schwan's Global Supply Chain Inc., based out of Minnesota was cited by the Occupations Safety and Health Administration for 32 safety and health violations at one of its facilities.  Also cited were two companies that provide staffing and maintenance services for Schwan's.  Schwan's was fined $185,700 by OSHA

Proposed poultry processing changes have ruffled many feathers

Proposed changes to how poultry is being processed in the United States is raising alerts for more than 100 groups. The groups are comprised of animal rights advocates, environmental watchdogs, farm and food safety group-members, as well as workers’ rights supporters. Together, they presented a letter to President Obama, urging him to reject the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) 2012 proposal. The letter was accompanied with over 200,000 petitions also against the changes.
