According to the Minnesota State Patrol, two Department of Transportation workers were injured when a car crashed into their truck on Interstate 35. The June 22 accident reportedly happened on a Burnsville stretch of the interstate between Black Dog and Cliff roads just before 4 p.m.

That is when the two DOT employees were reportedly placing traffic cones on the interstate to close off a northbound lane. The lane closure was part of a construction project installing a concrete flood barrier along the interstate.

One of the workers, a 57-year-old man, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to authorities. The other injured worker, a 43-year-old man, was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where officials listed him in critical condition.

Authorities booked the driver of the car, a 25-year-old man, into Dakota County Jail on charges of criminal vehicular operation. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, according to MSP.

When people suffer injuries in workplace accidents, they may experience not just physical pain but also financial stress. That in part is why Minnesota workers’ compensation law stipulates that all employers must have insurance coverage for their workers.

Many injured workers retain a workers’ compensation attorney to help them navigate the claim-filing process and to represent them if their claim is disputed. Furthermore, a workers’ compensation attorney may help injured workers explore the possibility of wage-loss benefits and apprise them of other potential benefits for which the workers may qualify.

It is important to remember that injured employees have the right to see any doctor of their choosing at any time, free from their employer’s influence and pressure. In fact, it is illegal for employers to force workers to see a certain doctor.
